Letting Go to Make Room

I made it.  I found myself on the board of one of our community organizations that was populated by the movers and the shakers; the individuals that helped shape our community with their decisions.  This was a place I had dreamed of being, a place to make a difference and I was humbled to have arrived.  Like so many things, however, the perception and the reality don’t always align.  After several months I found there was a lot of talk, many words and ideas shared but action became bogged down in posturing and differing agendas.  The movers and shakers were more the talkers and sitters.  Fortunately I realized this was not the place for me and resigned from the organization after a short two years.

Self-Improvement and Growth or Something Else?

  • January 27, 2021February 1, 2021

Being an HSP in a culture that doesn’t value kindness (Nice guy finishes last!) or the other traits we tend to have is challenging.  I have often felt like I was the odd one out, a square peg trying to fit in the round hole, and I had no one with whom to share these similar experiences. So I adapted.

The Hero and The Little Fishes

It is always interesting to me how the people that make the greatest impact on my life are brought into it and for John McReynolds it was a skateboard competition that was the catalyst.  A unique setting for two adults that were not proficient skateboarders.  He was a sports reporter for the Lompoc Record and was the tasked with promoting Lompoc’s first skateboard competition at the new skate park.  I was just trying to figure out how to run a skateboard competition.  And so our paths crossed.  What initially struck me about John was how he cared about the human element of the event.  The tricks to be performed, the venue itself, what type of boards or wheels were not important in his approach.  It was the participants, the competitors, the persons involved in making the event happen that he focused on and wrote about.  I remember observing this with interest and realizing later this tells you much about who John is fundamentally.

Change is Potential-Change is Hope

  • January 7, 2021

Change for me has been a scary concept far too often.  I am slow to relinquish where I am and slow to embrace the new.  Slow to take the next step and move out of the comfort of the known.  Yet change is one of the constants in life.  It is with us everyday from the hands on the clock moving to each breath we take.   Each moment is different from the next, each inhalation and exhalation different from the one before.

What If You Gave Yourself Gift?

  • December 10, 2020
  • by admin

It’s that time of year again when gifts seem to take center stage for many people.  Whether it is Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza or some other celebration, December seems to have become the month for giving and receiving gifts.  There is an importance, an emphasis, on making sure just the right gift is chosen for each person in our life.  Something that will bring them joy or excitement and will not be saved for the White Elephant exchange next year.

The Magic of Embracing The Moment

  • December 4, 2020December 4, 2020

I recently had the opportunity to camp with my husband and explore some new hiking trails.  We had chosen Death Valley as our destination as it was one of the warmest places in California in November and yet a comfortable daytime temperature, not to mention we felt we could readily practice our social distancing.  I wasn’t sure what I expected of the desert and this national park but I was unprepared for the majesty and the allure we encountered.  The diversity of color and land formations created beautifully unique scenes.  A beauty that while very different, was comparable to other places I had admired that were lush with vegetation.  Nature has an extraordinary ability to create magnificent works of art with whatever she has at hand.

A New Thanksgiving Day Tradition

  • November 23, 2020
  • by admin

As Thanksgiving Day approaches my feelings about the celebrations surrounding it are very different than they have been in the past.  I have come to understand the history I was taught surrounding this day is a bit skewed, having been presented from a very narrow point of view.  A view that represented a small portion of the people inhabiting this place we call America and while it may be how some experienced their arrival and celebration of this new world, it is not representative of all the inhabitants nor even the majority.  And so I question, what does Thanksgiving Day mean for me this year, a year in which the world I once knew no longer exists?

A Hero Among Us and the Dancer

  • November 18, 2020

Watching Sabrina dance on stage is pure joy but it also reveals a lot about who she is as a person.  She dances with grace, agility and strength but it is her heart that shines through the most.  These somewhat opposing characteristics are also apparent when she is dealing with socially sensitive issues.  She has so much compassion, particularly for those that don’t have a voice, and yet don’t mistake this for weakness for this is where her power is.  She is very willing to listen but will not relinquish her values because someone believes differently.  She is helpful and supportive beyond measure but will not be taken advantage of.  Just like a dancer’s flexibility, her grace is supported by an inner strength that is not apparent to the casual observer.

The Truth of Happily Ever After

  • November 5, 2020

The world seems so full of noise and angst right now.  The US election is over but still undecided and may well not be decided for many more hours, perhaps even days or weeks as ballot counts are contested.  It is easy for me to get swept up in this whirlwind of anxiety, wanting oh so desperately for things to play out in a way that I feel they should.  But I stop and remind myself this is not something I can control and that to argue with reality just leads me to frustration.
