Cream double narcissus blooms fringed with dew drops

The New, The Shiny, The Sugary

Over the last few weeks, I have watched a single, lone narcissus plant flourish along the edge of one of the dirt paths I walk in our neighborhood. Not native to our area, I wonder how it came to find its home in an area that is not under anyone’s care other than Mother Nature’s. More importantly, I have enjoyed watching its transformation in such a short time.

When I first encountered it with my husband, there was but a single, fragile bloom with the promise of more. As the days progressed with rain and sunshine, I have witnessed the single flower turn to several as the plant shares its glory with me and others that pass by.

When Our Bodies Whisper

Our bodies are amazing in their abilities.  They provide us with mobility, as well as the ability to communicate with each other, to taste different flavors, experience different scents, see different colors and patterns and finally to think.  We breathe automatically most of the time.  Our hearts beat without any impetus on our part.  Our digestive systems operate quite well when given the correct nourishment.  Finally, our bodies are able to heal many of the hurts that we inflict on them.

Grief, The Price for Love

It was a brief conversation I had with a friend as we discussed our common experience.  I had lost my dad a short two years ago and she had lost her mother in the past year.  The discussion was a few sentences of shared feelings, of how we each hadn’t realized how connected to our parent we had been and of how there was a lack of acceptance in our community for our mourning.  And then the conversation moved on, but the words had  intrigued me and I reflected on them for several days. There seems to be an unspoken taboo in our society about showing grief or mourning the loss of a loved one unless it is done quietly, behind closed doors where you aren’t seen.  In general, grief for any loss or transition is not tolerated beyond the first brief time frame of a few days by our society.  We are told to ‘get over it’ , ‘move on’ , ‘they are in a better place’ , ‘everything happens for the best’  or a multitude of other platitudes in an effort to move us beyond this place of sadness.  While I truly believe these things are said in good will, I also believe they are stated because the person speaking them is uncomfortable being in this place of grief with us.  I get it, it is not an easy or fun place to be and I have also witnessed someone being stuck in this place, but overall my experience has been that we hurry through it.  We push the pain away, deny the tears and are afraid to acknowledge the impact or changes in our life as we go about our day to day activities as if nothing is different.  Read more “Grief, The Price for Love” →

The Line in the Sand

Physical boundaries are easy to understand as many times we see them with some visual demarcation.  Some of these are meant to be crossed like state lines or may be crossed if requirements have been met as when traveling to another country or being invited into someone’s house.  There are many other boundaries, however, most of these unseen, that are not meant to be crossed but respected.  Respected by ourselves as well as others.  It is these ‘invisible’ boundaries that I have had struggles with through the years, being able to ascertain other people’s boundaries readily but blind to establishing and maintaining mine.  Read more “The Line in the Sand” →

Vacation and Reset

Sandy beaches, elegant swaying palm trees, a cool light breeze and the sun playing peek-a-boo with wispy clouds is one of my imagination’s ideas of a perfect stress free get away.  As I continue to daydream, other natural environments come to my mind including; hiking under foliage covered trails in the mountains, dancing amongst trees so tall I can barely glimpse the top branches as they touch the sky, and camping under stars so bright and visible, I share in their joy of not competing with light pollution. These are the places I enjoy escaping to for even a few hours to reset, decompress and reconnect with who I am.  Just envisioning being out in nature, no electronics and time to just experience life, brings a peace to my soul. If Only…

I recently had the experience of witnessing a young person standing up for her beliefs against a strong adult.  While she initially felt good that she had defended herself, she later regretted having done so as she felt this had made the difference in her being able to achieve the position she was seeking.  I witnessed her pain when the news was delivered, watched as she struggled to accept how the events had played out and listened as she spoke those words so many of us have uttered, ‘If only…’   Read more “If Only…” →

Up on a Shelf

Health.  Something I know I have taken for granted far too often.  Not necessarily my own, as I am keenly aware of how I am feeling, but my loved ones.  More recently, the assumption my family is healthy because no one is complaining has been brought into sharper focus showing me just exactly how tenuous our loved one’s health can be.  And how Mom was always right, never assume because… Read more “Up on a Shelf” →
