A Hero Among Us and the Fearless Voice

Though we had lived in the same small community for many years the first time my path crossed with Ashley Costa was just after she had won a seat to Lompoc’s City Council.  The Council for many years had been comprised primarily of middle-aged males from our community with the occasional middle-aged female, but never someone in their twenties.  To essentially be a lone representative in both gender and age as well as probably ideals was a challenge I couldn’t fathom anyone desiring but I  admired her for taking on those challenges.  When she did win my first thought was, “Awesome!  You go girl!” but that was followed with thoughts of how much work she had before her.  Little did I know at the time how Ashley thrives on challenge and hard work.

Should & Entitlement

It’s funny how we recognize something in another that we don’t see in ourselves.  I had heard often that others are a mirror to us if we care to look and pay attention but I am not sure I ever truly understood or believed this theory.  I have found that when I am sitting in judgement of another that is usually a signal that I have healing to address but for other emotions or thoughts which I don’t identify as a ‘judgement’ I hadn’t felt this mirror business held true.  Until I listened to a podcast by Kara Lowentheil about entitlement.

You Make a Difference

‘You make a difference.’  The words were spoken with gratitude and conviction, catching me off guard but they echoed through my mind for days.  What a sweet acknowledgment from someone about how something I had done had impacted her life in a positive way.  Someone I didn’t know. Someone I hadn’t met before.  The action she was commenting on was not a grand gesture but just something I do in the normal course of my work.  A practice others have felt unnecessary and challenged me about but I have continued due to my beliefs.  And yes, while I believed this action would  ultimately help someone, this was the first time I had proof positive that it had accomplished the intended outcome.

Just Be You Boo

We all have expectations of ourselves and others.  In many instances it is a function of being a part of society, filling the roles that have been structured for survival of the community.  I don’t know about you dear friend, but, the expectation to be some one other than who I am has been an influence throughout my entire life.  Either to present a more professional presence, be more fun and impulsive (I tend to be serious and introspective in nature), to be more outgoing with new people, more forthcoming in large groups of people or to not be sooooooo sensitive.  These are some of the areas I have often fallen short in, receiving criticism and judgement consistently through my life, to the point I believed that who I was was not okay.  I believed I needed to be someone else and so I changed as best as I could.

Faith in Yourself

Sometimes the journey is easy and joyful, some times it is challenging and back breaking.  It is the back breaking ones that teach us how to grow, to uncover the parts of us that are in hiding. It was one these paths I found myself on unexpectedly (and probably how it should be) more recently.

If Only…

I recently had the experience of witnessing a young person standing up for her beliefs against a strong adult.  While she initially felt good that she had defended herself, she later regretted having done so as she felt this had made the difference in her being able to achieve the position she was seeking.  I witnessed her pain when the news was delivered, watched as she struggled to accept how the events had played out and listened as she spoke those words so many of us have uttered, ‘If only…’   Read more “If Only…” →
