Less Comparison and More Compassion

It’s easier for you because you are smarter.  It is easier for you because you are stronger.  It is easier for you because your situation is different.  It is easier for you because… fill in the blank.  It’s easier for you because is a refrain I have heard throughout my life.  And perhaps things have been easier for me.  I really don’t know because I only know what I experience.  What I do know is that when these words are given back to me, even when I have said nothing about the subject at hand, what I hear is, ‘Your experience isn’t valid.’ Read more “Less Comparison and More Compassion” →

Abundance, Enough, and Energy Flows

  • June 23, 2022
  • by admin

There is an energy flow to everything. In some things, it can be seen as a river flowing. In others, like ice, the movement is not seen. Science teaches us all things have energy, little tiny particles in constant motion. Even though a rock appears only to exist, or thought seems to be ephemeral fluff, both have energetic qualities. And like a river, we can change the flow of energy; redirecting it so that it goes around us untouched, letting it flow through us supporting our needs, or stopping it much like a dam, either before the energy reaches us or trapping it inside. Viewing life through the lens of abundance has taught me much about these energy flows, how I influence them and they influence me.

Abundance mentality, the acceptance that resources are enough, successes are enough, and there is enough of everything to support everyone, recognizes and acknowledges that we are all connected. More important, it brings me into the present moment, letting go of how I believe things should be and accepting how things are. It leads me from a victim stance to one of empowerment, feeling energized and not drained, hopeful, not hopeless. It opens up opportunities and choices, leading to clarity instead of reacting out of fear or lack of choice. Abundance has taught me life is not as hard as I once thought, but enjoyable, creative, and even fun.

Approaching life with an expectation of enough or abundance allows the energy to flow, unobstructed and supportive. For example, when a deadline for a project looms and I realize perhaps I may not make the deadline as hoped and accept this as fact, I can feel my body tense. Thoughts become constricted, focused on the premise I will not finish in a timely fashion, which will likely result in a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, when I take a mindset that there will be enough time to finish what needs to be accomplished, I can feel the energy flow again. I notice space for my thoughts and, with space, clarity for how to proceed, given the parameters in place. Please don’t misunderstand. Time doesn’t magically appear and allow me to finish the task, but I can work with the time given more constructively and often, if not completing the job, at least arrive at an acceptable point.

I am not suggesting that we approach all our resources with the attitude that there will always be enough no matter our actions; this would be foolish as we are all called to be good stewards of the world. What I have found, however, is that by viewing my life with abundance versus scarcity, I open up my choices, able to flow with the surrounding energy instead of swimming against it.

Here are some key ways that have helped me adopt an ‘abundance’ approach.

  1. Gratitude for what I have-I focus on three things each day, not always material things; sometimes they are experiences and can be as mundane as listening to birdsong as I walk my dog in the morning.

  2. I center myself in the present moment. I do this usually with breathing exercises or using my five senses to anchor me.

  3. Developing and maintaining a growth mindset, I don’t have things all figured out, and there is so much to discover in this wondrous world.

  4. Being curious about the people with whom I interact. Asking questions about their lives and experiences, trying to understand and trying not to judge.

  5. Approaching things using a beginner’s mind or with my inner child and a sense of awe and wonder.

  6. Being aware of my dialogue with myself and others and reminding myself when I recognize I have put forth a scarcity view that perhaps there is another way.

Wishing you, dear friend, enough, no matter the situation on your heartfelt journey. ~♥~

Understand that abundance is a flow through energy and not about holding anything or counting anything, because that is when it becomes finite and you are expressing infinite energy.

Where Were You When You Heard?

There are some days and times that stand out in my memory that I will always hold dear and never forget.  The night I met my husband, the day I graduated from high school, the day my oldest niece was born as well as the night my first son was born and the morning my youngest son was born.  All happy events.  All life changing events.

A Hero Among Us-Lucy

Her petite stature belies the underlying strength and conviction with which Lucy Thoms-Harrington experiences life.  Indeed, on our initial meeting, I noticed her calm brown eyes and easy smile but these were accompanied by a presence that meant business.  It wasn’t a ‘get out of my way’ impression but rather an ‘I am here and we’re getting things done together’ presence.   For several years my encounters with Lucy were brief, (she was working full-time and then some with travel thrown in on a regular basis) however, this consistent strength and conviction to her belief system was apparent.  The truth was important to her.  Fair and equitable treatment for everyone was paramount.  And women’s rights?  Ask her a question or address something about women’s rights and the passion in her voice and the light in her eyes many times communicated more about how she felt than the words themselves.

We are all teachers and yet we are all students when we allow ourselves to witness another’s story.  I truly believe that everyone has a story of interest with lessons we can learn from and be inspired by.  I know I have experienced this with many different people throughout my life.  People that have given me hope or insight into how things can be better.  Sometimes they have been the light on the path when there is darkness, the encouraging word to believe in myself when I didn’t, but more often than not, they have shown me a different way to approach this thing we call life and for that I am eternally grateful. These are my heroes.

It’s the Small Things

Daily walks with my dog in our neighborhood have become my morning ritual.  The differing paths we take covering 1.5-2 miles each day are an opportunity to enjoy the brisk temperatures in the colder months and the warmth of the sun other times of the year.  I have found so much to be thankful for on these treks not the least of which is my dear walking companion.  There is also the birdsong, the caress of the breeze (or the forceful shove of the wind) and other walkers that we have come to know over the years.  Initially our encounters were brief, a good morning or hello but as time went on we now spend a few minutes catching up with each others lives.  Such simple pleasures but probably one of my most joyous times of the day.   Read more “It’s the Small Things” →

Finding My Voice

Being vulnerable and just being yourself in this world is truly frightening.  There are so many masks that we wear depending on the role and the situation, and while many times there is logic behind these behaviors, there have been times I have found myself hiding behind this mask.  Keeping the mask on.  Not saying what I want or believe and putting up with disrespect and disparagement for the sake of the cause.  For fitting in.  Ultimately this has come at the expense of my emotional wellbeing, not understanding the importance of establishing the line in the sand for my fundamental beliefs and how I should be treated.  More recently I began to understand these lines are necessary and are key to a healthy and joyful life. With this new found knowledge and understanding I have removed myself from environments that were not healthy for me and when the individual(s) were not willing to acquiesce to my requests for change.  Not an easy thing to do but a necessary action for healing.  When we do this, however, sometimes we let others cage us in too much in not wanting to experience discomfort, pain and unwanted feelings.

The Line in the Sand

Physical boundaries are easy to understand as many times we see them with some visual demarcation.  Some of these are meant to be crossed like state lines or may be crossed if requirements have been met as when traveling to another country or being invited into someone’s house.  There are many other boundaries, however, most of these unseen, that are not meant to be crossed but respected.  Respected by ourselves as well as others.  It is these ‘invisible’ boundaries that I have had struggles with through the years, being able to ascertain other people’s boundaries readily but blind to establishing and maintaining mine.  Read more “The Line in the Sand” →

Vacation or time away from home and the day to day routine is very healing and much needed in our overly scheduled lifestyles.  It can can also be challenging just to carve the time out and make the preparations but then you can breathe…the holiday has begun!  Or has it?   Read more “Reality Bites” →

Silent Responders

Something I have been challenged with in my relationships more often than not, are not responses of a nature I didn’t expect like anger, judgement or not understanding, but rather the lack of response.  The silence.  The non-acknowledgement.  The lack of follow through on a commitment made and then no communication.
