Blank Space in the Margins of Your Life

Buried in work and responsibilities I have felt stuck these last few weeks with the space in the margins of my planner seemingly to have disappeared.  We’ve had family birthdays to celebrate, future plans begging to be made, previous commitments needing to be honored and figuring out the whole voting thing, that in and of itself is a time eater.  All this in addition to the day to day necessities to navigate.  And, with the current COVID landscape, it seems everything takes.  Just.  That.  Little.  Bit. Longer.  Leaving little time for the extras.

Do You See the Moon During the Day?

  • August 13, 2020

At just a few months short of 3 years, my granddaughter is fascinated by much in life that I have begun to take for granted.  She notices small insects as they travel to and from wherever they were going, notices the breeze as it talks to the trees and loves to feel the sand from the beach as she sifts it with her hands.  At the sound of a plane she immediately scans the sky to identify where it is headed and is also ever quick to find the moon, night or day.  I had forgotten how often the moon is visible during  the day having relegated it to only my night time viewings.  At this thought I wonder what other things I have missed by deeming the timing is not right.

A Hero Among Us and The Cheerleader

When first meeting Ken Ostini, his six foot plus stature is rather imposing, but his friendly, warm manner and easy banter quickly expose his love for Lompoc as well as his long history in our community.  My interactions with Ken initially looked to be short lived.  He became the CEO of the Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce as my time on the board came to an end, hardly allowing us to learn each other’s name. Fortunately for me, a short time later, our paths crossed again and again on a regular basis as I was able to work with him for several years on different activities within our valley.

Vacation or time away from home and the day to day routine is very healing and much needed in our overly scheduled lifestyles.  It can can also be challenging just to carve the time out and make the preparations but then you can breathe…the holiday has begun!  Or has it?   Read more “Reality Bites” →

Faith in Yourself

Sometimes the journey is easy and joyful, some times it is challenging and back breaking.  It is the back breaking ones that teach us how to grow, to uncover the parts of us that are in hiding. It was one these paths I found myself on unexpectedly (and probably how it should be) more recently.

Who’s Ready for School?!

If you have children, especially of school age, summer is quickly coming to a close.  Mornings of sleeping in, not worrying about having lunches packed or if school clothes are clean and homework is done are soon too be a distant memory of luxury.  Though my children are grown I remember those times well and I recall hanging onto those last few mornings of peace.  No rushing to the car, no tears or harsh words for not being ready as expected.  Every year I would hope it would be different but, like groundhog day, the process would repeat itself to a great degree.  Invariably the protocols I had put in place to help prevent the mad dash out the door on school mornings seemed to work only when they wanted.  And, invariably, it was myself I would hold accountable.  Other mothers seemed to have it much more together.

Up on a Shelf

Health.  Something I know I have taken for granted far too often.  Not necessarily my own, as I am keenly aware of how I am feeling, but my loved ones.  More recently, the assumption my family is healthy because no one is complaining has been brought into sharper focus showing me just exactly how tenuous our loved one’s health can be.  And how Mom was always right, never assume because… Read more “Up on a Shelf” →
