Dear Trees, Thank You for Your Gift of Shade

It was a Saturday, and we had committed to spending the day with our granddaughter so her parents might have time to just be themselves instead of parents, if only for a short while. Fortunately, while breezy, it was a lovely sunny day, and I had planned activities that we could quickly pivot to as a toddler’s attention span seems to adjust every few minutes. From playing chase outside, giggling with each other as we lay on the grass gazing at the sky, to more structured activities like playing golf with the golf set her grandfather had gifted her, we were keeping her busy. The Magic of Embracing The Moment

I recently had the opportunity to camp with my husband and explore some new hiking trails.  We had chosen Death Valley as our destination as it was one of the warmest places in California in November and yet a comfortable daytime temperature, not to mention we felt we could readily practice our social distancing.  I wasn’t sure what I expected of the desert and this national park but I was unprepared for the majesty and the allure we encountered.  The diversity of color and land formations created beautifully unique scenes.  A beauty that while very different, was comparable to other places I had admired that were lush with vegetation.  Nature has an extraordinary ability to create magnificent works of art with whatever she has at hand.

Being Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

My husband has joked with me through the years about my visits to the beach.  Though I enjoy the beach I had developed a very particular experience that I wanted to have when there.  It couldn’t be too hot or too cold.  Too sunny or too cloudy.  I did enjoy a slight breeze but definitely not something that could be called wind.  I enjoyed the sand when it was warm to walk on, too hot was definitely not preferred and too cold was not fun.  He even teased me that there was too much sand.  (Sad to say there were a few times when I would bemoan the amount of sand that kept finding itself on my towel.)  I was Goldilocks personified.

When the Magic Happens

In the last few years I have had several people express to me that we are all here by choice.  Our souls choose our parents and the time to make the journey to this corporal world.  In many ways this idea is comforting, allowing me to believe there is a purpose behind everything I am experiencing and a reassurance that everything that happens is for a reason.  Similar to my belief that no matter the experience I am having, it is because God has placed me there for my learning and growth.  And yet, I also have free choice in so many ways.  I have the ability to direct much of what I do and experience.  Indeed, it is through choice after choice that lead me to this day, to sit here listening to the ocean play it’s melody outside and feel the breeze coming through the windows as I type these words.

When the Earth Held Her Breath

The landscape for most people has changed, at least a bit if not dramatically, with the advent of the pandemic.  With shelter at home decrees or just plain wanting to stay safe, what was perceived as a ‘normal’ daily routine quickly became a thing of the past.  For me there was a period of time that it felt like the Earth was holding her breath as we figured out how to navigate living in a world with the threat of a deadly foe that was unseen and virtually undetectable.

When a Waterfall Meets Concrete and Steel

Lower the bar.  Don’t worry about what you are accomplishing, there are more important things to consider during these times.  I recently had this posed to my by someone asking that isn’t this the time to lower the bar, if only for a bit?

I had to sit with this for a moment as my initial reaction was quite strong. Lowering the bar has never been the answer for me.  Pushing through and reaching the bar is what I know because there is always more work to be done, more learning to be accomplished, more cleaning to do, more books to read, more…just fill in the blank.  However, I reminded myself, we are all facing different challenges that a mere three months ago we hadn’t even considered.  So maybe there was some validity in exploring this option.

Endings~Today, This Moment

As my boys were growing up they were involved in the usual team sports, soccer (AYSO-all your Saturdays occupied), basketball and baseball with thankfully only one season of football thrown in.  My husband and I being the dedicated parents we thought we were supposed to be, were not content to sit on the sidelines and the majority of the time we found ourselves as coach, assistant coach, ref, team mom, etc.  There always seemed to be need and not enough volunteers.  Though the sports merry-go-round seemed to constantly spin and at times was overwhelming, those are memories that I cherish.

Lotus Position

Oh the inspirational, mystical image of someone sitting, beautifully at peace, eyes closed, legs crossed, hands resting on their knees, palms up with index fingers just kissing the thumbs!  What a great way to achieve tranquility! Or perhaps a sore knee as I found out when I first embarked on this leg of my journey.  Meditation was something I had heard about and thought I should do.  So with no instruction, no research, Read more “Lotus Position” →
