Cream double narcissus blooms fringed with dew drops A Heartfelt Journey

The New, The Shiny, The Sugary

Over the last few weeks, I have watched a single, lone narcissus plant flourish along the edge of one of the dirt paths I walk in our neighborhood. Not native to our area, I wonder how it came to find its home in an area that is not under anyone’s care other than Mother Nature’s. More importantly, I have enjoyed watching its transformation in such a short time.

When I first encountered it with my husband, there was but a single, fragile bloom with the promise of more. As the days progressed with rain and sunshine, I have witnessed the single flower turn to several as the plant shares its glory with me and others that pass by.

The Magic of Embracing The Moment

I recently had the opportunity to camp with my husband and explore some new hiking trails.  We had chosen Death Valley as our destination as it was one of the warmest places in California in November and yet a comfortable daytime temperature, not to mention we felt we could readily practice our social distancing.  I wasn’t sure what I expected of the desert and this national park but I was unprepared for the majesty and the allure we encountered.  The diversity of color and land formations created beautifully unique scenes.  A beauty that while very different, was comparable to other places I had admired that were lush with vegetation.  Nature has an extraordinary ability to create magnificent works of art with whatever she has at hand.

Turn by Turn Down A Mountain-A Lesson in Life

Having a fear of heights is not uncommon and something that I have lived with since I was a child.  While having a healthy sense of the danger present when being up high is normal for most people, for me it goes beyond the normal sense of caution.   It manifests not just with spiraling thoughts but also physically with my palms becoming sweaty and literally aching.  This is not limited to just my own physical presence of being up high.  The fear and the sensations come to life also in witnessing others whether in person, in a still picture or in a video as they are perched in what appears to me to be a precarious position.   For much of my early life it was easy to avoid most situations that would incite this uncontrollable reaction, but when I made the decision to learn to ski, facing this fear and figuring out how to tame it became a necessity.

Do You See the Moon During the Day?

  • August 13, 2020

At just a few months short of 3 years, my granddaughter is fascinated by much in life that I have begun to take for granted.  She notices small insects as they travel to and from wherever they were going, notices the breeze as it talks to the trees and loves to feel the sand from the beach as she sifts it with her hands.  At the sound of a plane she immediately scans the sky to identify where it is headed and is also ever quick to find the moon, night or day.  I had forgotten how often the moon is visible during  the day having relegated it to only my night time viewings.  At this thought I wonder what other things I have missed by deeming the timing is not right.

When the Earth Held Her Breath

The landscape for most people has changed, at least a bit if not dramatically, with the advent of the pandemic.  With shelter at home decrees or just plain wanting to stay safe, what was perceived as a ‘normal’ daily routine quickly became a thing of the past.  For me there was a period of time that it felt like the Earth was holding her breath as we figured out how to navigate living in a world with the threat of a deadly foe that was unseen and virtually undetectable.

Vacation and Reset

Sandy beaches, elegant swaying palm trees, a cool light breeze and the sun playing peek-a-boo with wispy clouds is one of my imagination’s ideas of a perfect stress free get away.  As I continue to daydream, other natural environments come to my mind including; hiking under foliage covered trails in the mountains, dancing amongst trees so tall I can barely glimpse the top branches as they touch the sky, and camping under stars so bright and visible, I share in their joy of not competing with light pollution. These are the places I enjoy escaping to for even a few hours to reset, decompress and reconnect with who I am.  Just envisioning being out in nature, no electronics and time to just experience life, brings a peace to my soul.
